Carl (or Coach Nelson as most Hurricane alumni know him) started coaching in 1971 at St. Jeromes High School in Kitchener. There he helped develop a strong basketball program winning 6 WCSSA championships and 1 OFFSA gold medal over his 20+ years.

In 1989, Carl moved to Huntsville where he found no community basketball and a fledgling high school program. After coaching for a few years at Huntsville High School, he decided that basketball in Huntsville could benefit from a community program. With the help of some key community members (Now in the Hurricane Hall of Fame), in 1992, the Huntsville Hurricane Basketball club was born. It started as a developmental feeder program for the high school but eventually evolved into what we know today - a club with 9 teams, annual summer camps and a thriving House League program.

A firm believer in constantly learning and evolving, Carl has broadened his knowledge and skills by coaching at over 50 summer camps across North America.

Carl has been coaching with the Hurricanes since the very beginning is still heavily involved today. He was the club’s treasurer for over 20 years. During his time coaching in Huntsville, has won 5 Ontario Championship medals (2 gold) through Basketball Ontario and 2 GBSSA championships.

I t is estimated that over his coaching career, Coach Nelson has coached 72 teams and won over 1100 games. Between these teams and the numerous camps in which he has been involved, Carl has not only molded thousands of young coaches and players, he has helped shape the future of basketball in Ontario.
