Good Morning Coaches, Athletes and Families,
We would like to apologize for the delay in communicating our plans with regards to refunds and/or credits due to the cancellation of the balance of the basketball season. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed all of our lives in the short term and potentially the long term.
Basketball Ontario has indicated that they will be refunding Ontario Cup registrations but have not suggested any partial refunds on team registration nor refunded us any money at this time. For all U12 and U14 teams we will be issuing credits that can be used for House League next fall or for Rep Team registration. All U16 and older teams will be issued a refund based on percentage of the season missed recognizing that there are inherent costs with the team over the entire season that will not be recouped and noting registration rates are subsidized by fundraising, some of which did not occur this year. For those receiving credits, should next season be cancelled, we would refund families at that time. All credits are transferable.
Coaches need to confirm which families are to receive a refund and provide the appropriate contact e-mail address on the attached document so that the club can directly e-transfer that family.
Our year end meeting will be held electronically on Monday June 1st from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm with several executive and director positions available. All coaches and adults are welcome to attend, details to be confirmed in the future, both by e-mail and on the Hurricane website. Feel free to pass this message to any interested volunteers that you know.
Coaches applications will be available late in May and are due in late June for the 2020 / 2021 season. We are planning to proceed next year as regular contingent on government regulations, school board access (gyms) and local health authority recommendations.
Please forward this letter to your entire teams contact list, copying the Club Executive (Sam, Mark, Tim, Michael) and reply as soon as possible with the COVID Hurricane Refund Form populated so we can execute those refunds and/or credits. Your team should have updated e-mail addresses from the Rowans Law sign offs earlier this season.
Coaches will be collecting uniforms already laundered and then arranging to have these sent to the Executive group for storage over the summer with all basketballs. Coaches will be keeping track of who has returned and who has not in order to ensure that we do not have to replace in the future. Jerseys or shorts not returned will be charged back to the individuals who did not return them.
Annually we have presented the Naismith Award to a graduating student(s) for their excellence as a leader and volunteer, setting an example with their team, with house league and sometimes as a volunteer coach. Based on the end of the season situation and lack of funds, we will not be awarding this honour in 2020.
We would like to thank the numerous essential services and health care workers who are on the front lines ensuring we all have access to those essential services and healthcare. Many of them are represented in our Hurricane Basketball family and THANK YOU is not enough. It is our hope that with social distancing, innovation and time the “new normal” will include basketball next season.
Be safe and well.
