The U14 Girls travelled to Oshawa to play four games in the Ontario Basketball League on December 7 and 8. The team showed incredible improvement over the weekend with each of the ten players having a career best game. Team defense, passing and dribbling with their heads up so much better than against Bracebridge the previous week.
Game # 1 vs. Durham Blues
The weekend started with a game against Durham, much more intense than any game played this year. Scoring was back and forth with awesome help defense from the entire squad. Huntsville prevailed 28 to 25 with Lily Dixon (10 points), Kaley Verheye (6) and Eva Martins leading the team in scoring.
Game # 2 vs. IEM Newmarket
Against IEM from Newmarket the intensity was even greater with Hurricanes rising to the task at hand with the teams tied at 22 at halftime. A couple of turnovers in the fourth quarter led to three easy layups for IEM were the difference in a Hurricane 40 to 37 loss. Dixon (13), Verheye (6) and Martins (4) again led the team in scoring. Jordyn Earl hit the first 3 pointer by the Hurricanes this year.
Game # 3 vs. Oakville Venom
Sunday morning saw the third consecutive game with amazing effort and improvement. Huntsville jumped to an early lead and comfortably held the lead all game winning 36 to 25. Verheye (14), Martins (14) and Dixon (4) led the team in scoring for the third time this weekend.
Game # 4 vs. Grimsby Grizzlies
In the final game of the weekend the Hurricanes had a rematch with the Grizzlies who had beaten them on opening weeekend. Again the Hurricanes struggled with the Grizzly zone defense and did not have the same focus and energy the team had showed in the first 3 games. They didn't gave up but Grizzly's pulled away late to win 24 - 17. Dixon (7), Earl (4) and Verheye (4) led the team in scoring.
Overall a very successful weekend to build on for the future. The Hurricanes record is now 3 wins and 4 losses and next play Parry Sound in a double header on Saturday in Parry Sound.
