The U19 Women travelled to Nipissing University in North Bay for their "double OBL weekend", two games each day in the Ontario Basketball League. The London Royals could not field a team so defaulted 2 - 0, so Basketball Ontario scheduled three league games (against London 86ers, STAC Hamilton & North Bay Spartans) plus an additional exhibition game against the London 86ers.
Saturday saw the weekend start with the league game against the 86ers. The Hurricanes started strong leading 30 - 21 at half time and coasted to any easy win 53 - 32 with all 9 players contributing. Game 2 saw Huntsville play STAC Hamilton. Led by Ella Mangaroff and Olivia Joiner, with two three pointers each, along with great team defence the Hurricanes won comfortably 53 - 25.
Sunday started with exhibition game against the 86ers. The Hurricanes came out on fire leading 19 - 2 six minutes into the game. It was a total team effort with Justine McNaughton leading the way in scoring 17 points in only 16 minutes of game time. Huntsville won 57 - 23.
The final match was against the home team North Bay Spartans who last month beat the Hurricanes 58 - 44. This was a defensive battle with Huntsville not scoring at all in the first 4 minutes but still managing to lead 22 - 14 by halftime. The Spartans dominated the thrid quarter cutting the lead to 26 - 25 at the break. Huntsville gutted out a very close 37 - 34 win with Millie Langlois (15 points) and Joiner (10) leading the Hurricanes in scoring.
With the win (and an earlier loss by North Bay to STAC) Huntsville clinched the regular season title in the Ontario Basketball League U19 Division F.
The U19 women host the Orillia Lakers at Huntsville High School on Tuesday April 16 @ 6:20 pm.
